A clinical case of equine fungal placentitis with reference to hormone profiles and ultrasonography OAK
MURASE, Harutaka; NIWA, Hidekazu; KATAYAMA, Yoshinari; SATO, Fumio; HADA, Tetsuro; NAMBO, Yasuo.
Fungal placentitis is an infectious disease inducing abortion in pregnant mares. In the present report, we describe a field case of abortion caused by fungal placentitis with consecutive examinations. The progesterone level and combined thickness of the uterus and placenta (CTUP) were abnormal before the onset of clinical signs. Additionally, the estradiol level started to change before the appearance of clinical signs. Abnormal serum amyloid A values and an abnormal fetal heart rate were observed after the onset of clinical signs. The present report demonstrates that the progesterone level and CTUP may be adequate as early diagnostic markers of fungal placentitis and bacterial infection. Endocrinological evaluation based on cutoff values or serial...

A Review of Neospora caninum and Neospora-like Infections in Animals OAK
Dubey, J. P..
Neospora caninum is a recently recognized protozoan parasite of animals. Until 1988, it was misdiagnosed as Toxoplasma gondii. Neospora caninum or Neospora-like parasites cause paralysis and death in dogs and neonatal mortality and abortion in cattle, sheep, goats and horses. Its life cycle is not known. Tachyzoites and tissue cysts are the only asexual stages known and the carnivorous definitive host is not known. Transplacental transmission is the only known natural route of infection.

Cervicovaginal aerobic microflora of women with spontaneous abortion or preterm delivery in Araraquara-Brazil Rev. Microbiol.
Raddi,Maria Stella G.; Lorencetti,Nancy C..
Microbiological routine exams of endocervix and vaginal specimens of 22 women with clinical history of recent spontaneous abortion or premature rupture of membranes were accomplished. Chlamydia trachomatis, Streptococcus pyogenes, Streptococcus agalactiae, Candida sp and Gardnerella vaginalis were recovered from 54.5% (12) of the women. Ureaplasma urealyticum was frequently isolated (45.5%) but 5 out of 22 had U. urealyticum only. Our report stands for the importance of quantitative as well as qualitative investigation on genital microflora in pregnant women, since it is likely to influence on pregnancy outcome.

Components of fecundity and abortion in a tropical tree, Dahlstedtia pentaphylla (Leguminosae) BABT
Teixeira,Simone de Pádua; Pereira,Rodrigo Augusto Santinelo; Ranga,Neusa Taroda.
Studies were conducted on pollination and patterns of fruit and seed production to assess the potential factors causing high fruit and seed abortion in Dahlstedtia pentaphylla (Leguminosae) through analyses of relationships between flower position in the inflorescence and ovules and seeds within ovaries and fruits, and flower, fruit and seed abortion. No differences were found in pollination and fruit set as a function of inflorescence position. There was no relationship, neither between degenerating ovules and their position within the ovary, nor between developing seed and fruit position. Maternal resource limitation related to fruits and embryos, due to the high cost of fruit production and seed maturation, was one of the factors that led to a high...

Flower and fruit development of Parkia pendula (Fabaceae, Mimosoideae) Acta Botanica
Piechowski,Daniel; Gottsberger,Gerhard.
Parkia pendula occurs in Brazil in Amazonia and in the northeastern Atlantic Forest. In the latter, its buds, nectar, and seedpod gum are discussed to be keystone resources for the mammalian fauna. To enhance the knowledge about these important nourishment sources, the aim of this study was to detect and describe distinct phases in the flower and pod development. The study was conducted in a 306 ha forest fragment in Igarassu, Pernambuco, northeastern Brazil. Six morphometrical variables were measured weekly at five inflorescences of two individuals from September 2003 to January 2004. Eleven distinct developmental phases were identified in the 21 weeks lasting development from the very first inflorescences to mature pods and are described in detail. These...

Investigation of the possible role of Chlamydophila abortus in reproductive failures in nrazilian herds of domestic ruminants BABT
Silva-Zacarias,Francielle Gibson da; Alfieri,Amauri Alcindo; Spohr,Kledir Anderson Hofstaetter; Lima,Bruna Azevedo de Carvalho; Oliveira,Rosângela Claret de; Turilli,Carlo; Lunardi,Michele; Otonel,Rodrigo Alejandro Arellano; Freitas,Julio Cesar de.
Chlamydophila abortus (C. abortus) infection is related to reproductive failure in domestic ruminants. Although it has not been well characterized worldwide, this pathogen has already been identified in some European countries and in the USA. In Brazil, preliminary studies have shown serological evidence of C. abortus infection in herds with low antibody prevalence. Until now, the identification of C. abortus in biological samples from females presenting reproductive failures has not been described in Brazilian herds of domestic ruminants. The aim of this study was to evaluate the presence of the C. abortus in a collection of abortions from cattle (n=85), sheep (n=12), and goats (n=8), in samples of vaginal mucus from cows (n=13), sheep (n=90), and goats...

Leptospirosis on animal reproduction: IV. Serological findings in mares from six farms in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (1993-1996) Braz. J. Vet. Res. Anim. Sci.
LILENBAUM,Walter.
From February 1993 until October 1996, 547 blood samples were collected from mares with reproductive problems in six farms of the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and tested by the microscopic agglutination test (MAT) with live antigens for antibodies to seven leptospira serovars. A total of 235 positive reactions (42.96%) at a minimum serum dilution of 1:100 were observed against one or more serovars, which in comparison to other studies developed in Brazil, may be considered as a high prevalence. On mares with anti-leptospiral antibodies, the predominant serovar was icterohaemorrhagiae, reactive on 102 (43.40%) samples, followed by 64 (27.23%) reactions against bratislava, and 34 (14.47%) against pomona. The high prevalence of antibodies to serovar...

Misoprostol and teratogenesis in neonates BJPS
Silva,Mariana Beatriz Scabora da; Ferreira,Aline de Assis; Habr,Soraya Ferreira; Bernardi,Maria Martha.
This paper is focused in some aspects of maternal exposure to misoprostol during perinatal period, and the abortive and teratogenesis effects on the fetus. The causes of malformations were revised, taking into account chemical, physical and environmental factors as well as the interaction between them. There are evidences that the practice of abortion tripled in Southern and Northeastern Brazil in 15 years, and one of the most frequent forms of abortion is through the use of misoprostol. In Brazil, 1991, 288,700 women were hospitalized as a consequence of complications induced by abortion attempt with this medicine. This fact resulted in the ban of misoprostol across our country, by Decree 344/98 determined by the Health Ministry. The use of misoprostol...

Pre-dispersal seed predation and abortion in species of Callisthene and Qualea (Vochysiaceae) in a Neotropical savanna Acta Botanica
Custódio,Luciana Nascimento; Carmo-Oliveira,Renata; Mendes-Rodrigues,Clesnan; Oliveira,Paulo Eugênio.
The ability of plants to generate fertile offspring is influenced by morpho-physiological and ecological factors. Hence, reproductive success is directly linked to factors affecting quantity and quality of their progeny. In the Cerrado (savanna) of Brazil, the Vochysiaceae is a widely distributed and ecologically important family. Factors affecting pre-dispersal seed predation and abortion were studied for populations of Callisthene fasciculata, C. major, Qualea multiflora and Q. parviflora. To characterize differences between genera, as well as among species, study areas, and individuals, we quantified pre-dispersal seed predation and abortion. Differences of seed abortion among the species were related to intrinsic reproductive features and not to area...
